The movie of the week - November 24

Wartime Todd Solondz

Synopsis Ten years after the masterpiece Happiness, shocking hypocrisy of bourgeois American analysis, Solondz takes characters and plots of the movie, however, changing actors and locations. The protagonist is always the Jordan family, which recovered yet from past failures and again struggling with fragile Joy, left alone after her husband's suicide, with the hysterical Trish, mother of two teenage children and former wife of a pedophile released from jail , and the billionaire Helen, Hollywood writer incapable of being happy. Time has passed, in short, but little has changed.

forgive and forget, or rather (as in the original title), "Life During Wartime": life in wartime. And there are many "wars" that the American director Todd Solondz , one of the fathers of contemporary independent cinema, filmmaker and columnist committed, ruthless in this movie that will reach the heart of America in the twenty-first century with a speech by family as you always political, social and philosophical. The film firm's illness, "Bush's permanent war" with the private hatred of the heirs of pedophile father, a quiet right-thinking that psychiatry in the previous film had ended up in jail for abuse of a child in elementary. Breaking the vicious circle of revenge, stop thinking of war as an absolute present. "Forgive the terrorists of September 11?" Asked the lady Trish resentful old son to Jordan. "But if they had tortured and killed your loved ones, do not you do something too horrible?" Replied the son eager to forget the sins of the father, Mr. Bill Jordan, just released from prison. The indication is the neglect of 'something you have done too badly. " If you do not forget the evil instincts are transformed into spectra persecutors who poison the lives of all.

Feeling frozen, minimalist style, huge problems, Todd Solondz is one of the few great storytellers of our times wounded. The first to take the slow and relentless change of sensibility and sexuality, from children to adults and adolescents to get. The only one to combine the comic and the tragic with a distracted tone as implacable nailing viewers to the screen and characters to their responsibilities. In Wartime no one is innocent, and no one is only really guilty, but each carries the weight of what it is and its consequences. Imagine the humor of Woody Allen made a thousand times more cutting and grafted onto a world of ad inventory, but made from a digital photo, glossy, bright surroundings anonymous and insignificant as any non-place of modernity.

In Solondz film nothing and no one is beautiful or seductive yet everything is real sensitive, significant, each person has a right to our compassion, mercy has every horizon not only for the life of the individual but the world, love and war, the West and the Middle East, religion and desire, closer than it appears at first sight. Here is the war in Iraq - and one of the sisters said "we are still a country at war - and then there's a war fought by all members of this family of American Jews with their own aberrations, falsity, and horrors disappointments. And, although never stated, but deep heart of the film, there is the "war" with infinite history of the Jews, all clotted, and yet always on the theme of forgiveness as a possibility for peace and the impossibility of forgetting as the fate of war. There is no escape from the horns of this paradox place with conscious determination Solondz. Unable to forget, you can not forgive. Unless, as suggested by the young Timmy, is not better to clear the memory, remove, rather than suffer. But if this is a choice that each individual can do on his private history, what can be done by the collective history, to their shared responsibilities. So it seems to say Solondz in this film in which private and public destiny and history, tragedy and forgiveness continually challenge each other in a battle without end.

Forgive and forget is an ensemble film, hard and intense, drawn, clear as a graphic novel, beautifully written and played by amazing actors.
